When you bring your child in for a Portrait Session, you automatically let her know she is seen and valued. Children's photography is more than just pressing a button on a camera. A well-timed photograph conveys a world of emotions
and quietly but powerfully lets children know they are valued.
At Calotype Photography, I won't boast that I always capture a child's "true self" or "their real personality," especially the first time we meet. (Sometimes this does happen!) But in many cases, children are guarded and don't casually reveal all facets of their personality to a stranger in the camera room. (This is a good thing.)
In reality, I engage with children in a way that makes them begin to feel at ease. This involves patience, a gentle demeanor, and the ability to make the session feel fun. As the Session progresses, most kids will open up and I'll catch a glimpse of real expression. And for families that keep coming back, year after year, our relationship grows and children become more invested in the process. The portraits get better and better!
