High School Senior Photos: Outdoor vs Studio
Choosing between outdoor and studio settings for high school senior photos can be a fun decision. Both options offer benefits, and I'll give you the pros and cons, at least when it comes to the services I offer at Calotype.
The Comfort of Outdoor Senior Photos
It's a bit of an irony to call outdoor senior photos 'comfortable,' considering they often involve braving the elements. Nothing too extreme around here in Missouri, of course, but it can frequently be too hot or too cold, the wind blows hair and clothing, humidity can affect hairstyles and curious onlookers might be around in public spaces. Plus, Sessions carry the risk of rescheduling due to rain. However, for some, being outdoors feels mentally comfortable. They don't feel like they're posing; instead, they appear to be in their natural habitat, just hanging out (with a professional photographer capturing the moment). Because of the right equipment and expertise (and multiple years of failing at outdoor lighting success, 🥴) I can still manage most of the outdoor variables to get great shots.
The Controlled Environment of Studio Photography
Studio photography offers a controlled environment free from wind, rain and spiders crawling up skirts (don't ask). There's no unplanned audience, and lighting can be easily adjusted to get the perfect shot. Studio sessions also require less time and planning, making them less expensive than outdoor Sessions. Once seniors are in the comfort of the camera room, any initial mental blocks usually disappear. I make it a point to draw out the subject's personality, allowing them to look as relaxed as if they were in their own living room.
Differences and What to Expect
When it comes to pricing, a studio-only Session fee is 175.00, while an outdoor Session starts at 275.00. If the location requires traveling longer distances beyond local parks or neighborhoods, a different quote may apply. Sessions with both studio and outdoor are available, too, but I learn more about the subject's ideas before offering a quote.
Real-Life Successes: Senior's Outdoor Photo Experiences
This late spring, I photographed a high school senior boy who chose to have his pictures taken outdoors. We started at Morse Park, an easily accessed public area with a creek and walking trails, conveniently located three minutes from my studio. His dad also arranged for a few photos at the nearby MFA Agri Service loading dock because they liked the industrial feel. The roof over the loading dock provided shade and softer lighting, so the senior didn't have to squint in the bright afternoon sun. We even pulled in the old family truck for a few shots, keeping it in the shade so the focus remained on the senior and not on bright slashes of light hacking away at the photograph.
In another outdoor case, going back to the previous fall, I photographed a high school senior girl at her family property that had a creek running through it. Fall is a great time for senior pictures in Missouri, especially the Joplin/Neosho area with our green fields and wide, clear creeks. The weather is usually ideal and the woods and creek provide a timeless backdrop for senior portraits. This was photographed in the very late afternoon to keep the trees from being too bright green. The results were fantastic, and most importantly, the senior was thrilled with her photos.
Making the Final Choice: Outdoor vs Studio
Ultimately, the choice between outdoor and studio photography is up to you. I would encourage you to look over all my work- a lot plays into whether you like the image, such as the subject, outfit, prior knowledge of the subject, etc. We all have biases. 🥴 Outdoor sessions take longer and aren't always picturesque when we have to deal with bleak winter and windy spring, but the subject's happiness is key. If they believe they'll be happier outdoors, that will reflect in their photos! Both options have their unique advantages, and it's all about what makes the senior feel most at ease. If you're uncertain, I recommend scheduling a free consultation to tour the studio. It doesn't take long, and when in doubt, gathering more information will help you make the best decision. I'd love to listen to your questions and concerns!
